A Message from Rabbi Freelund As the days since October 7 grind on, the inevitable accusations against Israel have come to the front. Israel’s right and duty to defend its citizens against the terrorist army of Hamas is unquestioned by the world’s democracies. Once the reality of war becomes evident to us, we are naturally horrified by its death and destruction. This is the very nature of war, even one of just cause. As always, social media and cable news are likely the worst places to get accurate information about what is happening in Israel and in Gaza. Hamas lies about its activities and its failures, and these lies are multiplied across the above media. Inflammatory images, disinformation and demonization abound. Photographic evidence and intercepted communications prove an Islamic Jihad rocket misfired into al Ahli Hospital in Gaza, its remaining propellant causing horrific injuries and deaths to healthcare providers and patients alike. The terrorists launched the rockets from close proximity to the hospital, militarizing the area, which is in and of itself a war crime. This is nothing new, as approximately 450 rockets aimed at Israel’s civilian population have landed inside Gaza since October 7. Just last week, Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon took a direct hit from Hamas rocket fire, with the rocket striking the childcare clinic. It was the second time the hospital was struck by the terrorists. Deliberate targeting of an Israeli hospital does not make our news. It is up to us to remain strong and resolute in the face of a disinformation campaign. President Biden’s emergency visit to Israel today underscored America’s commitment to Israeli sovereignty and security, to the appropriate use of force in response to a terrorist army, and to the need for a peaceful future and a two state solution. We can all stand for the same. I urge you to remain informed, remain compassionate towards everyone affected by war inside Israel and in Gaza, and to be a strong advocate for the release of the captives and the disarmament and destruction of Hamas, the shortest path towards the cessation of hostilities. Please note that our donations for relief are still critical. This is an emergency situation for Israel and every dollar we give makes a difference. The URJ, the USCJ and the OU have all endorsed the JFNA giving campaign as their emissary for donations. For those who have requested, a video of my sermon from last Shabbat is available on the Synagogue website homepage. Am Yisrael Chai |
